Cortisone Injections

 Cortisone injections can help reduce inflammation, pain, swelling, and stiffness in joints, bursae, tendon sheaths, and other soft tissues.

In our clinic, we typically use Depo-Medrol (methylprednisolone) or triamcinolone, often combined with a local anesthetic (lidocaine) to improve comfort during and immediately after the procedure.

Lidocaine typically works within minutes and may provide temporary pain relief for approximately 1 hour. The cortisone itself may take several days to start working and can take up to 1 week to reach its full effect.

 

Benefits may include:

• Pain relief

• Improved mobility and function

• Reduced inflammation

• Potential reduction in the need for oral steroids or other pain medications

 

Risks are generally low but may include:

• Temporary increase in pain after the injection ("steroid flare")

• Bruising, bleeding, or skin discoloration at the injection site

• Infection (rare)

• Temporary facial flushing or elevated blood sugars

• Tendon weakening or cartilage damage with frequent injections

 

Most injections can be safely repeated after approximately 3–4 months if clinically appropriate.

 

A prescription for the medication is required and can be provided either before or after your appointment
